Works on Paper

These works are on canvas and on paper using mixed media; oil, acrylic, ink, oil stick and watercolor. Movement and rhythm are vital to my work. I attempt to capture both through brush strokes and line with the added vibrancy of color, tonal variation and provocative composition. Sometimes I use oil stick and watercolor, which are incompatible but coexist; the inevitable friction interests me. I work from nature, keeping the basic structure and formal elements, avoiding details - the image is related to reality, but I prefer to invent rather than to imitate or copy. Regardless of the subject matter, color, light, mark and composition are the focus. Simplicity is paramount, editing details -only the essential parts, which should be intriguing and have an aesthetic appeal, remain.

Relief Work

I work with glue that I color with ink and acrylic (sometimes add sand) which I pour on paper, canvas or burlap. No brushes are used and the paper is not directly touched. The glue is squeezed from a bottle held above the paper. As the medium is liquid, the work is free and fluid and is a strong vehicle of expression for the artist's energetic voice. The mark is immediate, incessant and direct as in calligraphy.  The rhythm is continuous, spontaneous and confident.  The images are sometimes wild, such as flying towels or they can be calm as in linear seascapes.  As glue is liquid and runs quickly, the subject matter of sea and towels on a line, (which move continuously), is a perfect union of subject matter and medium.  Making the work is physical, controlled and methodical. The glue dries in relief.  The images have a reference to reality, but are not realistic; the details are eliminated and the structural base remains. I prefer to invent rather than to imitate.
